Woman with meningitis lies in coma for 10 days. Doctors say she got infected from “food in refrigerator”. Even if it’s not spoiled, it’s not safe

A sick woman

Ms. Fong, a 61-year-old woman from China, fell into a coma for 10 days and developed meningitis after eating food stored in the refrigerator.

According to Dr. Du Hu, deputy head of the neurology department at a hospital in Zhejiang Province, China, more than a month ago. Ms. Feng began to experience facial paralysis, a crooked mouth, and was unable to close her eyes completely. She went to a local hospital for examination and treatment. A CT scan of her head showed no abnormalities.

Two days later, Ms. Fong’s symptoms worsened. She had a headache and a high fever.

The local hospital diagnosed her with viral encephalitis and treated her with antiviral drugs, but the situation continued to worsen and Ms. Fong fell into a coma. Doctors at the local hospital transferred Ms. Fong to a high-level hospital in Ningbo for further treatment.

When she arrived at the Ningbo hospital, Ms. Feng’s condition deteriorated rapidly. Dr. Du said her level of consciousness had declined. She was unresponsive to calls, and her fever had reached 39 degrees Celsius. Her condition was critical, and urgently needed to find the cause and treat her.

The doctor then performed a spinal fluid test and the results showed that the white blood cell count and protein in Ms. Fong’s spinal fluid were significantly elevated. The doctor initially diagnosed her with meningitis. But it was not yet certain whether it was a viral or bacterial infection.

Dr. Doo continued that the test results later confirmed that Mr. Fong was infected with  Listeria bacteria,  which causes meningitis.

Dr Pham Vy, head of the neurology department. Said that after identifying the cause, doctors adjusted her medication, and after three days. Her symptoms improved and her body temperature returned to normal.

Ms. Fong received comprehensive treatment, such as controlling cerebral edema, anti-inflammation, and protecting brain cells, under the careful care of the medical staff of the Department of Neurology. Her condition improved. After nearly a month of treatment, her consciousness returned to normal, and she could communicate easily. Ms. Fong was discharged from the hospital, but still needs further rehabilitation.

The “cause” is what is stored in the refrigerator.

Dr. Pham Vy said about the cause of the disease, “According to the patient’s family, one day before the symptoms appeared, Ms. Phong ate a plate of sausages that had been stored in the refrigerator but not heated up. The plate of sausages may have been contaminated with listeria bacteria.”

Dr Pham Vy said that Listeria bacteria can grow and reproduce in the refrigerator, especially when food is not stored properly, such as not closing the refrigerator door tightly or storing raw and cooked food together. Listeria bacteria can enter the สมัคร UFABET วันนี้ รับเครดิตฟรีสำหรับสมาชิกใหม่ human body through food, such as vegetables, fruits, undercooked meat or contaminated food, and can cause meningitis.

Doctors say the mortality rate from Listeria bacteria can be as high as 20-30% and if not treated promptly, it can put the patient’s life at risk.

Dr. Pham Vy recommends that to prevent Listeria infection, people should follow these guidelines:

  • Clean and organize your refrigerator regularly. Avoid storing food in the refrigerator for too long, especially perishable food.
  • Store raw and cooked food separately and cover cooked food to prevent contamination.
  • Reheat food stored in the refrigerator to a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius or higher before eating.
